50 Dead as Refugee Boat Catches Fire Off Libya Coast

TRIPOLI: 17.09.2025: At least 50 Sudanese refugees died when a vessel carrying 75 caught fire near Libya, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed. Medical aid was provided to 24 survivors rescued from the disaster.

Libya remains a key transit hub for migrants aiming to reach Europe across the Mediterranean.

The situation has worsened since the 2011 fall of Muammar Gaddafi. According to IOM, over 867,000 migrants from 44 countries were in Libya as of February 2025.
