CM Buzdar imposes emergency in Murree

LAHORE: 08, JANUARY, 2021: Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar on Saturday has imposed emergency in Murree owing to heavy snowfall and directed the local administration to provide relief to the stranded tourists.
In a statement, the CM Buzdar has ordered to open government rest houses and offices for the tourists.
He assured that all the possible resources will be utilized to facilitate the tourists in this difficult time.
On the other hand, Federal Minister for Interior Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Saturday confirmed that 16-19 people have lost their lives due to snowstorm in Murree and other northern areas. More than a thousand vehicles are still stuck.
An emergency has been declared in Murree with the Pakistan Army and Rangers troops called in to help clear the traffic jam and get tourists out of the hill station.
The minister arrived in Murree to monitor the recue operation in Murree and Galyat, where he said in his video message that five platoons of the Pakistan Army have been called, tourists are being shifted to safer places while FC and Rangers have also been called in for relief activities.
The government has banned entry of tourists in Murree and Galiyat region to control the situation. Local administration has launched operation to rescue the stranded tourists; however, teams are facing difficulties due disruption in mobile service and electricity supply.
Thousands of tourists entered the hill station on Friday to witness the snowfall causing heavy traffic jams on Murree-Islamabad Motorway.
The Motorway police and local administration is busy in helping the tourists who had been stuck in their cars in the heavy traffic jam. The process of sending the cars back from Murree has also been started.
The Rawalpindi deputy commissioner tweeted that around 23,000 vehicles have been evacuated safely from Murree and around 1,000 are still stranded.
The district administration is working round the clock to evacuate the remaining vehicles safely, he added. (04)
