ISLAMABAD: 07.10.2025: The Supreme Court’s eight-member Constitutional Bench has approved live streaming of proceedings on petitions challenging the 26th Constitutional Amendment.

The amendment, passed in October 2024, limits the SC’s suo motu powers, sets a three-year term for the CJP, and allows the PM to appoint the next top judge from the three senior-most judges. It also led to the creation of the Constitutional Bench, now reviewing the legality of the amendment.

Petitions filed by bar associations, PTI, and others argued the amendment: Weakens judicial independence; Was passed without proper debate or constitutional procedure; and Changes key appointment and evaluation rules for judges.

During Tuesday’s hearing, lawyers demanded a full court and live streaming. The bench, led by Justice Aminuddin Khan, approved streaming but reserved judgment on forming a full court. Hearing resumes Wednesday.
