Alarming Survey: 60% of Girls in Sindh, Balochistan Married Before 18

news-details

Nearly 60% of girls in Sindh and Balochistan are married before turning 18, according to a startling new survey shared at a national dialogue in Islamabad.

The event, aimed at tackling child, early, and forced marriages (CEFM), brought together parliamentarians, officials, and civil society leaders who pledged collective action to end the practice.

The National Civil Society Dialogue, hosted by SPO with support from the US State Department and Save the Children, featured expert panels and passionate calls for reform. Speakers warned that CEFM continues to rob girls of education, health, and dignity.

Key figures, including lawmakers, youth activists, and child protection specialists, called for stronger legal protections and sustained community efforts. Senator (Retd) Javed Jabbar stressed self-reliance in tackling the issue, invoking the legacies of Fatima Jinnah and Benazir Bhutto.

Closing the session, SPO Chief Arifa Mazhar called for long-term commitment beyond donor-driven projects. The event concluded with a joint pledge to ensure every Pakistani child grows up safe, educated, and free from early marriage.
