SAN DIEGO: 01.10.2025: A US Navy submarine lost over a century ago has been located more than 1,300 feet beneath the Pacific Ocean, west of San Diego.
The USS F-1, which sank on December 17, 1917 after a collision during a training run, claimed the lives of 19 sailors.
A recent deep-sea mission led by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) used advanced submersibles, including the human-occupied vehicle Alvin and autonomous vehicle Sentry, to map the wreck in high detail without disturbing it.
The submarine was found resting on its side, still largely intact, and now home to marine life. Using thousands of overlapping images, researchers built precise 3D models to study the site and monitor changes over time.
The mission also served as a training exercise for pilots and engineers working with some of the world’s most capable undersea vehicles.
